Obesity and Foot Problems

Did you know that if you are considered overweight or obese, studies have shown that you are more likely to suffer from foot problems such as

– Tendinitis
– Type 2 Diabetes (which can induce foot problems)
– Nail problems
– Stress fractures

As you may know, here at The Podiatry Centre, we are big advocates of the principle ‘Prevention Is Better Than A Cure’. With that being said here are a few things you can do to to possibly prevent the onset of the the foot problems we have listed above.

1. Watch What You Eat! –  The NHS has a great information on what foods we should be eating and other foods we should minimise in our diets to ensure we keep and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you are wanting to lose weight, visit your doctor and see if you can be referred to a dietitian; or if you prefer more of a group setting or support group, try a weight loss group like Slimming world or Weight Watchers.

2.  Move, Move, Move –  You already knew this one was coming didn’t you…! so basic but it’s true. The more active you are, the less likely you are to be overweight. Try basic exercises like walking, and taking the stairs instead of getting the lift or elevator. If you have issues with your joints and taking the stairs and walking more is not an option for you, consider swimming or Aqua Aerobics at your local Leisure Centre.

3. Mindset –  When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, mindset is rarely ever mentioned, but it’s very important to have a good mindset when it comes to living a healthier lifestyle. Ask yourself ‘WHY’ you are wanting to get healthy and when times get tough and you want to fall off the healthy bandwagon, go back to your ‘WHY’ and remind yourself ‘HOW’ this is going to benefit you on a long term basis. This should keep you motivated and keep you on track!
